Ski Lessons in Morzine with Billski
Billy has been skiing in the Portes du Soleil since he was four years old and he was one of the youngest BASI qualified instructors. He started Billski in 2007 to provide ski and snowboard lessons in Morzine for all ages and abilities.
We love his enthusiasm and relaxed laid back style. He brings out the best in your ability and has a real genuine love for the mountain which he passes on to all our clients! He is most popular for private lessons, great if you can lost your love or confidence and also kids absolutely love him… especially when he gets the gorilla suit on! FUN…FUN…FUN.
A recent drive from Geneva airport together gave us a chance to catch up and find out a bit more about his ski school.
Why set up your own school when you can work for someone else?
I wanted to provide more flexible, personal lessons for my clients. I enjoy teaching a variety of skiers and get a huge buzz out of passing on my passion – inspiring my clients to love the mountains as much as I do.
What floats your boat about Morzine and why start BILLSKI here?
Morzine has everything. We have great accessible off-piste to push the boundries and an all year round vibe. I also like our tree-lined runs to escape the clouds. Morzine is so accessible from Geneva; frequent visits from friends and family is a big reason why BILLSKI is here.
Why is BILLSKI different from the other ski schools in Morzine?
I absolutely love what I do.
There isn’t one single thing that makes Billski different; there’s 3 things – my passion, the fun we have (we laugh a lot!) and sometimes I wear a pink gorilla outfit!
What is your ideal day on the hill?
First lifts and powder lines all morning around Avoriaz and Mossettes. I love hiking into the quiet spots, perhaps Pepsi max (a great off-piste run) before a quick coffee and snack at any of the local cafes followed by some moguls under the chairlifts. Its also great to do a bit of piste cruising and have a late long lunch with some mountain cheese to fill me up. You always need to fininsh a day with a cruise back to town to talk about your epic day over a cheeky Robbo’s demi.
Why bother going up the hill when the weather is so bad you can’t see the tips of your skis?
I very rarely have a bad day teaching on the hill.
A whiteout is challenging and fun; it really makes you feel that you are in a wild place which you can not take for granted. It challenges your balance.
Rain is a tricky one. No matter what I am wearing and how much I spend on kit those little droplets find their way in! The plus side to rain is that the slopes are quiet; only a few are brave enough to stay out in the rain all day long. Rain gives the top layer of snow a bit of softness and makes you grip your skis like a ski hero!
Most memorable lesson or client?
I have so many nice, interesting clients from all over the world.
My most memorable client would have to be Sally Gunnell and her family. Lovely lady, great chairlift chat and so incredibly in tune with her body that she was a real pleasure to teach.
My most memorable lesson, which has had the most impact on my life, was the day I meet my now wife and mother of my child. She was on holiday with some uni friends and we hit it off. We had a fun lesson, full of laughs. She re-booked and we stayed in touch. Now we own a house in Montriond, have a 1 year old daughter and have a nice life in the Alps.
What do you do when the season in Morzine finishes?
Rest and let my legs recover. I love spending time with family & travelling to new places.
I have a big renovation project of my own; a 200 year old hay barn, which we are renovating into a ski chalet. I work for a few different clients doing building renovations including new kitchens and decking.
I love to get on the road bike and explore the mountains. I enjoy walks. As Italy is nearby, I pop over the valley to eat pizza and Italian coffee. The Italian lakes is one of my favourite places to go camping.
If you could choose one famous person to teach, who would it be?
Alex Ferguson. I would love to listen to his stories and to hear about how to stay at the top of the coaching/managing game for so long.
If you could ski with anyone in the world for the day, who would it be?
I think it would be inspirational to ski with any of the top class skiers. I get the honour to ski each year with a ski legend called Bob Rankin. He features in a lot of Warren Miller ski movies. I once mogul raced against the legendary Glen Plake which goes down as a good day for me!
Billski’s instructors are fun and skilful and their knowledge of the Portes du Soleil area make them a great choice for booking your ski or snowboard lesson in Morzine. For a good laugh while you are improving your skills, Billski is the way to do it.
