You might already have your summer holidays mapped out with different trips and activities, but a winter holiday is something that the whole family can enjoy. From grandparents to grandkids, going away to a new and exciting destination allows the family to spend quality time together, without the distractions of day-to-day routine.
A multi-generational, or 3G holiday, is where three different generations of the family go on holiday together. Grandparents, parents and their children (and even aunties, uncles and cousins) spend time together in a holiday location.
It gives grandparents the opportunity to spoil the kids with treats and late bedtimes and all the things that mean endless holiday fun, while you might just be able to book in a dinner for two without the need for a babysitter! Everyone has quality time together and also the opportunity to do things individually as well – it’s a perfect combination that really works well.
1. Spend Quality Time Together… In an Amazing Location!
With busy schedules and living away from each other, it can sometimes feel like a stretch to find time to catch up with family. It is therefore essential to plan something extra special once in a while to spend that quality time with the ones you love the most.
What better place to spend it than in the mountains, with the amazing alpine scenery and magical winter holiday atmosphere. Morzine is an incredibly family friendly resort– it offers something for everyone.
2. More Time For You
If you have young children, it’s helpful having an extra pair of hands to look after them. You’re taking away the perfect babysitters – they know your children, they’re available 24/7 and they’re free! This means that you and your other half can enjoy some precious time alone and dine at one of the many restaurants Morzine has to offer.
Different families have different dynamics and needs, but with the grandparents and possibly other family members there, it means the family has more freedom to do different activities.
3. New Experiences to share
Multi-generational holidays can be full of really special experiences, staying in a beautiful location with stunning vistas and thrill-inducing activities allows you to reconnect and make moments that can be cherished.
If you’re going on holiday with three generations, why not spend it creating a mutual interest! From powder-loving parents to kids kindred with the slopes- it’s something that your children can carry on as a hobby into the future!
4. Cut the Costs
Accommodation can cost less when you’re in a larger group! Split the cost of accommodation and food for an all-round cheaper holiday. Plus, if you’re looking at staying in a self-catered chalet, the multi-generation experience works out great as you can share the cooking between you!
You can also also halve or even eradicate altogether childcare costs if you have extremely generous in-laws! Have a bit of time with your parents and on the slopes child free, by using a private nanny service which can often flex with your needs and work around your requirements as well as your in-laws. After all… they need some holiday time too! We have some great contacts here in our Childcare page.
5. Activities for Everyone
If you tend to find that when the holidays come, the kids start bouncing off the walls in excitement, raring to try every activity available, then skiing is the perfect option. For active families, ski resorts have enough activities and facilities to keep even the most restless occupied.
Think endless skiing and snowboarding fun- and for those non-skiers in the family think sledging, swimming, ice-skating, ice hockey… the list goes on.
Plus you might find some undiscovered talents! Whether your kids take to the snow quickly and have to be moved to the next class up in ski school, or you find out that Grandad used to be quite the skier in his heyday as he zips past you on the slopes!
6. SKI (Spend your Kids Inheritance) on Something that Matters
You’re never too old to enjoy the things you love, as 100 year old George Jedenoff demonstrates in this clip!
Previously, spending the kid’s inheritance (SKI) was something that grandparents did on their own. On retirement, they set about doing all the things that they hadn’t had the opportunity to experience, when they were working and bringing up their family.
Nowadays, becoming a SKI-er can also mean using some savings to provide a family holiday that, without their help, just wouldn’t happen.
Imagine what a gift you are giving to children, if you can take them on a winter wonderland trip where they learn to ski or board? What a legacy that would be!
7. Memories to Treasure Long After the Holiday is Over
A 3G holiday is the perfect opportunity to build that family photo album. It’s something that the kids won’t be able to stop talking about and what’s better than involving the whole family in this?
These days, it’s a fact that people prefer to spend their money on experiences rather than material things.
8. There’s a Reason it’s Becoming so Popular…
Sainsbury’s the Supermarket Giant conducted a survey, which showed a huge rise in Multi-Generational 3G Family Holidays. Thomson research has shown that 38% of Brits have been on a 3G holiday.
The Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance survey showed that a whopping 80% of people who experienced these types of holidays, felt that having 3 generations present had a positive impact on the trip and the main reasons for going on multi-generational holidays was to make up for lost hours and spend time with family members.
9. In Recent Events
Recent political changes have made many of us reevaluate how we spend time with loved ones. Dementia Tax is a name used by some, to describe the proposals for changes to social care in the Conservative Party’s Manifesto.
It reminds us of how a change in legislation can affect our own circumstances, practically overnight. Uncertainty can be just around the corner for all of us, however, there is an upside- we just need to remember what it is!
So there you have it, 9 reasons to go on a multi-generational winter holiday- it shows that families that ski together, stay together!
How Multi Generational Winter Holidays Can Work for Your Family
Sometimes it can be difficult to see how a multi generational holiday could look for your own family. Here are a few ideas based on what some of our previous guests have done that have come as large family groups.
Generally with the Grandparents close at hand, it means parents can have a bit of well deserved time off from the kids and some ski fun, similar to the old days pre children!
Most of our parents tend to meet up with the Grandparents at lunchtime on the mountain. Morzine offers a great selection of mountain restaurants that are very easy to access with pushchairs and little ones on sledges from the village Gondolas, and the parents can ski to see their precious kiddies having had a morning of blasting around the pistes.
Tag teaming time on the hill when your in-laws or parents are also big ski fans can also work really well, especially if you tie this in with some part time childcare. More importantly for active Grandparents, there is nothing better than a morning skiing- picking up the kids from ski school, going to meet Mum and Dad and then heading for some lunch and a spot of sledging. This works brilliantly at the bottom of the Pleney pistes in Morzine. There is a wealth of lunch choice and some great sledging spots, all within a short walk of a More Mountain chalet!
All of you sometimes deserve a day off… a lot of families go for a walk towards the Valley De La Manche and take the sledges, stopping for a coffee en route. This is a nice relaxing walk in the snow, and you can get the bus back into Morzine so the kids don’t get too tired!
Wednesday nights are generally staff day off so this is usually spent at a good restaurant – a lot of the restaurants in Morzine do an earlier sitting so you can get the kids fed by 7pm.
And of course, if your parents are there, all the more reason to make the most of a night out guilt free, as you know the kids are safely playing with Granny and Grandad.

This type of family dynamic is becoming more popular where the parents feel more comfortable about leaving their precious little ones with their parents or family members rather than nannies.
