Why spend Christmas in Morzine?
Christmas in Morzine is a little different from Christmas at home – and that's exactly the point.
You can still have the tree, the presents, Champagne and a proper Christmas dinner. But you can also ski on Christmas morning, stop for lunch overlooking the mountains, watch Father Christmas arrive down the Pleney and finish the day in a hot tub surrounded by snow. What's not to love?
Morzine-Avoriaz is particularly brilliant for a family Christmas ski holiday in the French Alps because it really does have something for everyone.
And importantly, Morzine isn't just a ski resort. It's a proper, year-round Alpine town with a real community and a lovely atmosphere. At Christmas, the centre is lit up with festive decorations, the independent shops, restaurants, cafés and bars are buzzing, and the streets fill with families, skiers and locals enjoying the celebrations.
During the day, you have the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area on your doorstep, with skiing and snowboarding across Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and beyond. When the lifts close, you come back to a lively village rather than an isolated, purpose-built resort.
It's easy to get here too. Geneva Airport is around 90 minutes away by road, making Morzine an easy choice for families travelling from the UK and elsewhere in Europe – particularly when you're bringing everything but the kitchen sink for Christmas!

Make Christmas your own
One of the things we love most about Christmas in Morzine is that there really are no rules.
Open presents in your pyjamas and ski all morning. Come home and cook a traditional Christmas dinner. Meet friends for lunch on the mountain. Have everything delivered to your apartment. Book a private chef. Dress up and head out to a restaurant. Or do a bit of everything.
If you're staying with More Mountain over Christmas, our team can help organise all the extras before you arrive – from airport transfers, lift passes and ski hire to food, wine, meal deliveries and private chefs – leaving you more time to actually enjoy Christmas.
After 20 years of living in Morzine, Christmas here still feels special to us. There's something about seeing the village lit up, watching the torchlit descent on Christmas Eve and heading up the mountain on Christmas morning that never really gets old.
Then all that's left to decide is who's cooking the turkey 🤣
What's happening in Morzine for Christmas 2026/27?
For two weeks over Christmas and New Year, Morzine’s main square transforms into a Magical Enchanted Village. Expect spectacular shows and parades, live music, various activities for all the family, and of course fireworks and the arrival of Father Christmas.
Most of the activity takes place around the centre of Morzine and the Tourist Office square, making it particularly easy to enjoy if you're staying in a centrally located chalet or apartment.
Cosy up with a vin chaud or hot chocolate and join in the festivities with everyone in Morzine’s Tourist Office square as Father Christmas arrives. Then count down to the spectacular firework display over Pleney.
Local tip: Even if you don't have young children, head into town for the Christmas celebrations. It's one of the loveliest times to see Morzine – and a good excuse for a vin chaud!

Christmas Eve in Morzine
Christmas Eve is one of the real highlights of Christmas week in Morzine and one of those evenings when the whole village seems to come together. A place for family and friends to come together and look up with a vin chaud in hand and watch the fireworks!
As the lifts begin to close, the area around the Pleney snow front starts to fill up. Le Tremplin, at the foot of the slopes, is always a great place to soak up the atmosphere, usually with live music and DJs, families gathering outside and plenty of festive cheer.
Then it's time for Father Christmas to make his entrance – and naturally, this being Morzine, he doesn't simply arrive by road!
Traditionally, the evening includes a torchlit descent down the Pleney piste, with Santa making his way down the mountain followed by ESF ski instructors carrying flaming torches. Watching the lights snake their way down the darkened piste is pretty magical, particularly for younger children.
Once safely off the mountain, Father Christmas makes his way through the streets towards the Tourist Office square, accompanied by a festive parade and crowds of families.
By this point, central Morzine is buzzing. Bars and restaurants spill out onto the streets, there's music and entertainment, people are wrapped up outside with glasses of vin chaud, and the whole centre of town has a brilliant Christmas Eve atmosphere.
The celebrations are topped off with fireworks over the Pleney, visible from much of central Morzine.
Front-row seats from your More Mountain chalet or apartment 🎉
If you're staying in one of our centrally located chalets or apartments, you're perfectly placed to enjoy it all – and several of our properties have fantastic views towards the Pleney.
Chalet Le Stade and Apartment Petit Stade are particularly special on Christmas Eve. They're directly opposite the Pleney snow front, so you can be right in the middle of the celebrations or retreat inside and still have an incredible view of the action.
You can wander out and join the crowds, stop for a drink, watch Santa arrive and enjoy the fireworks without worrying about driving or getting a taxi home afterwards.
Local tip: Head into town early and make an evening of it. Grab a vin chaud, enjoy the atmosphere around the Pleney and watch the torchlit descent before following the celebrations into town. If you're planning to eat out afterwards, book well in advance – Christmas Eve is definitely not the night to wander into your favourite Morzine restaurant at 7pm hoping for a table for eight!
The exact Christmas Eve programme and timings can vary each year, so check the official programme closer to Christmas.
Where to eat Christmas Dinner in Morzine
There are three main ways to tackle Christmas dinner in Morzine. You can eat in, eat out or dine on the slopes and go for apres for a completely different Christmas Day Experience!
Organise as much as possible before you arrive. Christmas week is busy and chefs, deliveries and restaurant tables get booked early.
In your chalet or apartment - Christmas Dining Chez Toi!
For families, this is probably our favourite. You can stay in your pyjamas for presents, head out skiing for a few hours and then come home to your own Christmas celebration.
Our More Mountain properties have fully equipped kitchens, and we add Christmas trees and festive touches to our properties over Christmas week.
If the thought of doing a supermarket shop immediately after arriving in resort fills you with dread, our concierge team can also help organise many of the extras before you arrive. Depending on availability, we can help with food and drink, wine, meal deliveries and private chefs as well as your ski hire, lift passes and transfers.
Our exclusive Meal Delivery Service is available on Christmas Day so expect turkey with a delicious Savoyard twist - Christmas dinner is no exception.
Our concierge team will collect your meal from La Grange and deliver it to your chalet or apartment on Christmas Eve. This gives you the ultimate flexibility for Christmas Day as you just need to heat your meal, as per the included instructions, so you can enjoy it whenever you want.
Alternatively, for another traditional Christmas dinner with all the usual trimmings, Damian McArthur at Dining Direct offers a delivery and reheat service similar to Meals on Wheels.
We recommend a number of excellent private chefs who all make superb food and are great company to have any day of the year, let alone Christmas.
If you're even considering hiring a private chef in Morzine over the Christmas period, we strongly recommend getting in touch with them as soon as possible because we know they'll get booked up!
Christmas Dinner at a Morzine restaurant
If your definition of a holiday includes absolutely nobody doing the washing up, book a restaurant. Morzine has a great selection of restaurants, from traditional Savoyard restaurants to more contemporary dining.
Christmas opening times and special menus change from year to year, so check directly with the restaurant before booking. In Morzine town centre, More Mountain favourites, La Grange, always serve up a delicious dinner which is more of a traditional turkey dinner - hence is very popular with the Brits.
The Clin D’Oeil near the Carrefour supermarket in Morzine is an excellent choice for a more traditionally French menu, including superb duck dishes. La Rotonde is also a firm favourite of ours, with something for even the fussiest of eaters!
In France, Christmas Eve – Réveillon – is traditionally a major part of the Christmas celebrations and is traditionally based around seafood, with fish, fruits de la mer, and oysters. You'll find plenty happening on the evening of 24 December but be aware that the menus are usually set for Fruits De La Mer so there is not much choice for a Turkey Dinner for Christmas Eve.
Whether you want to go for the traditional turkey dinner, or try something else, if you want to eat out on Christmas Day we strongly recommend booking as early as possible.
Skiing on Christmas Day in Morzine
Yes – you can ski on Christmas Day in Morzine.
And we think it's one of the best things about spending Christmas in the mountains.
There's something very special about opening presents, putting on your ski boots and heading up the mountain while everyone back home is still peeling potatoes.
From Morzine you can ski the local Morzine-Les Gets area or head towards Avoriaz and explore further into the Portes du Soleil.
For an easy Christmas morning, we'd keep it simple.
Take the Pleney or Super Morzine gondola. Enjoy a few runs around Pleney and Les Gets or head to Avoriaz, visit Linderets and then head home for lunch via Super Morzine for a Vin Chaud.
If you're planning Christmas lunch on the mountain, you can make a longer day of it.
Best for: families who want a proper Christmas morning but don't want to sacrifice a ski day.
Local tip: Don't over-plan it. A couple of lovely morning runs followed by Champagne and Christmas lunch is considerably more relaxing than trying to ski to Switzerland and back before the turkey is ready.
Christmas Lunch on the Mountain
If you're happy to abandon the traditional turkey completely, Christmas lunch on the mountain is hard to beat.
Ski in the morning, find a sunny terrace or roaring fire and settle in for a long Alpine lunch.
Pleney and Nyon
Staying around Pleney and Nyon makes life easy if you want to ski in the morning but don't want to venture too far from Morzine.
Le Vaffieu on Pleney and Chez Nannon on Nyon have long been More Mountain favourites.
Avoriaz and Lindarets
Avoriaz and the Lindarets valley give you plenty of mountain restaurant choices and can also work well for mixed groups of skiers and non-skiers. La Passage and Le Petit Linderets are our favourites.
Pedestrians can reach Avoriaz via Prodains and the Lindarets sector via Ardent, making it possible for non-skiing family members to meet the rest of the group on the mountain.
In Avoriaz, Les Trappeurs and Chez Flo are within walking distance from the top of Prodains lift. Both serve typically Savoyard dishes with plenty of local specialities and daily chef’s specials.
The Lindarets bowl has a number of restaurants to choose from. One of our regular stop-offs is Les Marmottes, full of character with great, reasonably priced food.
Further into the Portes du Soleil
Strong skiers can turn Christmas lunch into a bigger day out and head farther into the Portes du Soleil. If you don’t have any non-skiers in your group then we suggest heading to Chez BaBeth in the Plaine Dranse area for a truely unforgetttable experience!
Babeth herself will entertain you with her outgoing personality and showmanship. If you are lucky she will even give you a Christmas present!
Just remember that you still have to get home. Top tip: Christmas Day is not the day to discover at 4pm that you've missed the last connecting lift back to Morzine.
Christmas in Morzine with children
Morzine works particularly well for a family Christmas because there's plenty to do beyond skiing.
The Village Enchanté programme brings entertainment into the centre of town throughout the Christmas period, culminating in the arrival of Father Christmas.
There's also outdoor ice skating in the Tourist Office square. Over the main Christmas period in 2026, the rink is scheduled to open daily, giving families another easy activity in the centre of Morzine.
Add sledging, hot chocolates, snowy walks and skiing and there's no shortage of ways to keep children occupied.
It's also a good option for multi-generational families.
Grandparents and non-skiers can enjoy the village and potentially meet skiers for lunch without everyone having to follow the same itinerary.
Best for: families and mixed groups where not everyone wants to ski all day, every day.
What else can you do in Morzine at Christmas?
You certainly don't have to ski every day.
Depending on snow and weather conditions, Christmas week could include:
- Outdoor ice skating
- Sledging
- Snowshoeing
- Winter walks
- Shopping in Morzine
- Long mountain lunches
- Swimming or spa time
- Exploring neighbouring villages
- Hot chocolate stops
- And simply doing absolutely nothing beside the fire
One of the advantages of staying in central Morzine is that you can split up without complicated logistics.
Some of the family can ski while others wander into town, go skating or meet friends for lunch.
