How to get to Morzine by Train

A step by step to travelling to Morzine by train

Travelling to a winter or summer mountain vacation by train is gradually gaining popularity.  Possibly due to some of its benefits, such as being more environmentally friendly, potentially cheaper, you can admire the views, avoid lines at airports and relax as you travel across the country. It’s a good way to see other cities or landmarks on your way to the mountains.

One thing to note, is that you can’t go all the way to Morzine by train.  The closest train stations are Cluses or Thonon-Les-Bains, and a little further, larger stations such as Lyon and Geneva.  From these locations you can get a transfer, taxi or hire car to bring you up to Morzine.

So here is some information about travelling to Morzine and the French Alps by train from the UK.

Travelling by train from the UK

Your first step is to book the Eurostar from London to Paris, where the final stop is Gare du Nord, the international train station in the north of Paris

Next, you need to cross Paris, to another station called Gare de Lyon by taking the Metro or a taxi across the city. This takes 20-25 minutes and you can find the fastest routes using Google Maps.

From Paris take the 2 hour and 40 minute train on the TGV Lyria heading to Geneva Cornavin (9785).

Now you have a few options:

  1. Alight the train before Geneva at Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and change to another train headed to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet (96526) and get off at Cluses. It will take approx. 1 hour 25 minutes.
  2. Alternatively, it would take 1 hour 30 minutes by road, either by a transfer, taxi or hire car to Morzine. See the route here.
  3. If you’d like to go via Thonon-Les-Bains, and take in the views of Lac Leman  (Lake Geneva) you would continue on the train all the way to Geneva Cornavin.  From Geneva, you can jump on a 1 hour Léman Express to Thonon-Les-Bains. Morzine is only 40 minutes by road from Thonon-Les-Bains.
