Winter in Morzine: More Than Just Skiing

Ski holidays aren’t just about skiing, or even just for skiers. There's always plenty of things going on in Morzine during the winter months so whether you have a non-skier in your group, are looking for something to do on a ‘rest’ day, or when the lifts have closed for the day, here is what's happening around town during the season.

Family fun

The square by the Tourist Office in the centre of Morzine always has something going on and is a good place to soak up the atmosphere of the town.

Every winter season kicks off with the Village Enchanté, two weeks of illuminations, shows, entertainment, and a sprinkling of festive magic, including a visit from Santa and New Year celebrations.

When spring comes along, the square is transformed into a kids' village with shows, workshops and games for the family focused Kingdom of the Marmots (Royaume des Marmots).

Just off the square you’ll find Le Room, Morzine’s own Escape Room. Perfect for families with teenagers (or grownup kids!); you’ll need to work together to solve the clues and see if you can make your escape before the timer runs out!

Away from the centre of town, there are plenty of non-skiing activities to try in Morzine.

Give your legs a break and try an alternative way of getting down the mountain with Indian Aventures. They run snowmobiling, night sledging, and Yooner sessions (a cross between a sledge and a ski) that will have you laughing all the way down the piste.

If you’ve always dreamt of building your own igloo, then make it a reality this winter with Igloo Morzine. They will find the best spot around and show you how to build a proper igloo. If that sounds too much like hard work, head up to Village Igloo in Avoriaz where you can grab a drink and marvel at the amazing ice rooms and sculptures. You can even stay overnight if you’re brave enough!

For something totally different, head to Alta Lumina in Les Gets. This is a spectacular light and sound show set in the woods that will take you on a magical, immersive journey. Although it’s open year round, winter is the perfect time to visit, especially when there’s snow on the ground adding to the magic.

Alta Lumina is just a fifteen minute drive from Morzine. If you don't have a car you can take the Balad'Aulps Ligne 1 or 2 bus into Les Gets centre and then the free Ligne B navette up to Le Lac / Ecoles stop, or give Taxi Morzine a call for a door to door service. Remember to wrap up warm and wear some good walking shoes!

Get Involved

Morzine plays host to some amazing events throughout the winter, and they’re not all ski related!

If you want to enjoy the mountains at a slightly slower pace, DaysAway Adventures run regular snowshoe walks throughout the winter suitable for all abilities. This is a perfect way to stretch those muscles and give your legs a brief rest from skiing (there’s usually cake or vin chaud involved too - yum!).

Think Winter in the Alps and you probably think: snow, sunshine and après. Well, what could capture this more than a music festival on the mountain?! In Morzine-Avoriaz, we are lucky enough to have not one, but two regular music festivals: Rock the Pistes and Snowboxx.

Both are amazing fun and definitely worth checking out while you’re here.

Spectate

Ski Racing is big news in the Alps, with some of the world’s best skiers coming from France. Every year several competitions take place attracting some of the big names in alpine skiing and bringing an amazing atmosphere to the slopes and town.

Keep an eye on our What's On In Morzine This Winter events page which we'll update as and when things get announced!

Morzine is part of the Portes du Soleil, the biggest cross-border ski area in Europe, so there are a lot of pistes to explore but, as you can see, also finding some time for non-skiing activities will make your next ski holiday in Morzine one to truly remember!
