Morzine in Winter: The Ultimate Guide [Updated 2023]

Morzine is one of the best Winter resorts around. With a huge ski area, a traditional mountain village feel, an incredible number of activities on offer, and easily accessed by car or plane, there's a reason (okay, many reasons) why we've chosen to live here, and our guests come back year after year.

An Epic Ski Area

Morzine is located at the heart of the Portes du Soleil, this is a huge area that straddles the French - Swiss border. During the Winter, the 12 resorts that span the Portes du Soleil are linked with 650km of pistes, with around 200 ski lifts servicing 1036 km2 over 14 valleys.

All of this means that during a week's holiday, most people will only just scratch the surface of what is available to them. There are so many possibilities here, you will find it difficult to get bored. And if you want a challenge, try skiing the full Portes du Soleil circuit in one go!

There aren't many places where you can ski in one of the largest ski areas in the world, and whizz down pistes in two different countries in one day. 

Great for Beginners

Morzine's slopes are great for beginners whether you have got a day or two under your belt already or are a complete newbie. The nursery slopes on Pleney are easy to get to for learning the basics and they join onto nice wide blue runs for gentle progression during your holiday.

We recommend booking some lessons, especially if you have never been skiing or snowboarding before. You'll learn much quicker and find it much less stressful than if your mate or partner tries to show you the basics! There's a big choice of ski and snowboard schools in Morzine, with most having English speaking instructors so you don't need to worry about the language barrier, just focus on standing up and sliding down!

Awesome for Experienced Skiers and Snowboarders

Don't think that Morzine is just for families and beginners. With the sheer amount of terrain available across the Portes du Soleil, there is more than enough to entertain advanced skiers and snowboarders. We have challenging black runs, including the infamous Swiss Wall (le Mur Suisse), epic off-piste, and progressive snow parks.

Some of the best terrain and snow can be found in Avoriaz which sits at 1800m, but Les Gets and Chatel also have some hidden gems. Group Holidays

Morzine is ideal for groups of friends. Just as the pistes are suitable for all abilities, the nightlife can be as calm or crazy as you want. Whether you want a relaxed aprés drink in a quiet bar to a full on all-nighter, you'll find it in Morzine.

The slopes around Morzine are also home to the Rock the Pistes and Snowboxx music festivals which usually take place in March so if you want to combine your ski holiday with a music festival check the dates and get booked in before they sell out!

For larger groups, staying in a catered chalet is a great option as you have the space to be together but without worrying about cooking and cleaning. Couples

Holidaying in Morzine as a couple is fantastic, as there are so many different ways to do it. Learn to ski or snowboard together, try out one of the many snow and non-snow related activities or simply explore the Portes du Soleil together.

With just the two of you, you can enjoy the flexibility of doing what you like, especially if you stay in a self catered property.

Staying in a catered chalet can be fun too. It is a really sociable experience when you share a chalet with like minded people. As a couple or a small party of friends, you can join another similar group or other couples and have the opportunity to be more sociable in a catered property - meet like-minded skiers around the dinner table and chat to the hosts. You will always have something to talk about during dinner, and by the end of the week everyone is getting on like old mates, especially over a bottle of home-made MM Toffee Vodka!

Your First Visit

The reason Morzine has traditional Savoyarde charm, is that it is not a purpose built resort. Morzine is an old farming and mining village that just so happens to be located in a valley surrounded by snowy mountains. Don't let the quaint look fool you, this is a modern ski resort with a lot packed in to a relatively small space, but without feeling cramped or overwhelming.

All our properties are centrally located so once you arrive you can easily take a walk through town to get your bearings. The main centre of town where you'll find most bars, restaurants and shops runs from opposite the Pleney slopes, through the Tourist Office square and down rue du Bourg. 

As mentioned above, Morzine is at the heart of the Portes du Soleil. From the town centre you have easy access to Les Gets and Avoriaz. Jump on the Pleney bubble to explore the Morzine and Les Gets side of the valley, or take the Super Morzine lift to head up to Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes du Soleil.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Morzine?

The type of holiday you have can really depend on what time of the Winter you come to Morzine. Do you want a Christmas with a sprinkle of alpine magic, off-peak bargains, school holidays or Spring conditions?

Our favourite time of the the year is either early January for fresh snow and  powder days or mid-March for quiet pistes and warm sunshiny days drinking rosé on the terrace!

Because Morzine isn't just a ski resort, there are lots of things to do  when you are not sliding around on planks.

Getting to Morzine

Easily accessible from the UK by car or plane, you can choose how you want to get to Morzine. 

Morzine is one of the most northern French ski resorts, meaning it is about a 9 hour drive from Calais. The great thing about driving is that you can fill your car and bring everything you need and want with you. You could actually make the most out of your drive through France, by stopping over night in Dijon or one of the other historical cities on the way here. This will also give you the advantage of arriving in Morzine fresh and ready to hit the slopes. If driving isn't an option, or you just don't fancy it, then flying is very easy too. Best of all Morzine is only one hour and twenty minutes from Geneva Airport via a transfer bus, so its super quick to get here. EasyJet and Jet2, along with all the usual airlines like BA, KLM and SwissAir, fly direct into Geneva in Winter. 

Our recommended transfer company is Skiidy Gonzales, who will collect you from the airport and drop you off outside the front door of your chalet or apartment.
