Christmas in Morzine: What to Do and Where to Eat

What could be more magical than spending Christmas surrounded by snow-capped mountains with your nearest and dearest? Christmas in the French Alps really is the stuff memories are made of. Here's the lowdown from the More Mountain team about spending Christmas in Morzine.

Why Spend Christmas In Morzine?

Morzine is a traditional Alpine village, around an hour and a half’s drive from Geneva International Airport. In the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine-Avoriaz really does have something for the whole family, from kids to grandparents alike, and Christmas is no exception.

Spend your days on the slopes, or on a snowshoe adventure, then soak up the atmosphere around town in the evenings when all the bars and restaurants open their doors.

Take a look at our reel for a little teaser of what's on offer. And yes, all footage is from Christmas in Morzine last year!

Festive Celebrations In Morzine

For two weeks over Christmas and New Year, Morzine’s main square transforms into a magical Enchanted Village. Expect spectacular shows and parades, live music, various activities for all the family, and of course Father Christmas himself!

Christmas Eve is the main event of the holidays here in France and celebrated in style. Cosy up with a vin chaud or hot chocolate and join in the festivities with everyone in Morzine’s Tourist Office square as Father Christmas arrives. Then count down to the spectacular firework display over Pleney.

If you’ve got little ones with early bedtimes, or you’d rather watch from the warmth of your accommodation, Cerf Penthouse offers almost 360-degree views of Morzine. Or grab a drink and watch the fireworks over Avoriaz from Chalet Beau’s gorgeous hot tub.

What About Christmas Dinner?

Christmas dinner is a huge part of Christmas Day, but you don't have to swap turkey for tartiflette when you come to Morzine.

Christmas Dinner Chez Toi

If your family tradition involves presents before dinner, then having Christmas dinner in the comfort of your laid-back luxury accommodation is the best option.

Put your presents under the tree (which we will have decorated for your arrival), enjoy a glass of fizz next to the fire, and then sit down to a delicious dinner. The best part? You don’t have to cook it yourself, unless you want to!

Let someone else do the hard work so you can all enjoy the day together. We recommend a number of excellent private chefs who all make superb food and are great company to have any day of the year, let alone Christmas. If you're even considering hiring a private chef in Morzine over the Christmas period, we strongly recommend getting in touch with them as soon as possible because we know they'll get booked up!

Another great option is to book our food delivery service, Meals on Wheels. We partner exclusively with local restaurant La Grange to deliver pre-prepared restaurant-quality food direct to your apartment. This service is available throughout the winter, and Christmas dinner is no exception. Expect turkey with a delicious Savoyard twist!

Our concierge team will collect your meal from La Grange and deliver it to your chalet or apartment on Christmas Eve. This gives you the ultimate flexibility for Christmas Day as you just need to heat your meal, as per the included instructions, so you can enjoy it whenever you want.

For a traditional Christmas dinner with all the usual trimmings, Damian McArthur at Dining Direct offers a delivery and reheat service similar to Meals on Wheels.

If you do want to cook your own Christmas dinner, all our self-catered chalets and apartments have fully equipped kitchens for everything you need. We can take care of your shopping and have it delivered to your apartment on arrival.

If you have any specific food requirements (maybe a turkey...?) let us know as soon as possible and we can help.

Christmas Dinner In Morzine

There are a number of restaurants in town that serve a traditional turkey Christmas dinner, complete with all the trimmings.

In Morzine town centre, More Mountain favourites, La Grange, always serve up a delicious dinner. Le Local also offer a set Christmas menu, or for a spectacular setting beside lac de Montriond, check out Hotel du Lac.

In France, the main Christmas meal is eaten on Christmas Eve and is usually based around seafood, with fish, fruits de la mer, and oysters often served throughout the festive season.

The Clin D’Oeil near the Carrefour supermarket in Morzine is an excellent choice for a more traditionally French menu, including superb duck dishes. La Rotonde is also a firm favourite of ours, with something for even the fussiest of eaters!

Whether you want to go for the traditional turkey dinner, or try something else, if you want to eat out on Christmas Day we strongly recommend booking as early as possible.

Christmas on the Mountain

Of course, you might want to have your Christmas meal on the mountain - you are spending it in a ski resort after all!

Eating on the mountain means you can have a few runs in the morning with your family and friends, then head straight to the restaurant. You'll usually be greeted with a cosy log fire and a glass of vin chaud - perfect for warming those fingers and toes!

Expect traditional Savoyard and French menus more than turkey and the trimmings, but if you’ve never skied to dinner before, this is a really fun and exciting thing to do. Just remember, you may have to ski back down the mountain afterwards, so go easy on the festive tipple!

Here are our top restaurant recommendations for Christmas on the mountain that everyone can enjoy, even the non-skiers in your group:

Around Avoriaz & Lindarets

Any of the restaurants in Avoriaz and the Lindarets bowl are great options as they’re very easy to get to on foot. Pedestrians can take the free ski bus from Morzine centre to Prodains or Ardent, then take the telecabine up to Avoriaz or Lindarets respectively.

In Avoriaz, Les Trappeurs and Chez Flo are within walking distance from the top of Prodains lift. Both serve typically Savoyard dishes with plenty of local specialities and daily chef’s specials.

The Lindarets bowl has a number of restaurants to choose from. One of our regular stop-offs is Les Marmottes, full of character with great, reasonably priced food. For skiers, the Lindarets bowl is easily accessible from Avoriaz or Chatel, so you can plan your route accordingly, or even just stop by for a quick hot chocolate when you fancy a break.

Over in Plaine Dranse

If you don’t have any non-skiers in your group then we suggest heading to Chez BaBeth in the Plaine Dranse area for a truely unforgetttable experience!

Babeth herself will entertain you with her outgoing personality and showmanship. If you are lucky she will even give you a Christmas present! Babeth serves a set menu for Christmas. Past menus have featured goose and turkey, served with Champagne and canapes.

Plaine Dranse is the area above Chatel and is accessible for skiers from the top of the Chaux Fleurie chairlift in Lindarets. You will need a full Portes de Soleil area pass, and make sure you keep an eye on the time so you don’t miss the last lifts back over to Morzine!

On Pleney and Nyon

For mountain restaurants accessible right from Morzine town centre, we recommend Le Vaffieu at the top of the Belvedere chairlift on Pleney (making it another non-skier friendly option), and Chez Nannon on Nyon.

Both restaurants serve fantastic traditional Savoyard food. Think local meat and cheese with a lot of wine! The great thing about La Vaffieu and Chez Nanon is that you can ski back down to Morzine without needing to catch a lift - just don’t stay too late or you might need a headtorch!

After a big lunch and a day of skiing, what’s better than relaxing in your own hot tub or sauna? Some of our properties, like Chalet 218, even offer the best of both worlds with an outdoor sauna and hot tub, so you don’t have to choose!

The Christmas Magic

Regardless of where you end up eating your Christmas dinner, we know that it’s the small touches that really make a difference.

All our properties are decorated with festive Christmas trees, and if you need any little extras, our in-resort team are here to help. We also recommend getting in touch with Sarah at Apeeling Cakes to whip you up some mince pies or Christmas cake if you get your order in early enough!

Morzine is a great place to soak up the festive atmosphere at Christmas.

So, if you want to make memories that will last a lifetime, backed up with some FOMO-inducing photos, take a look at our remaining properties for Christmas week and come and experience it for yourself!!
